It’s time for Ignite2Lead to take a break from writing about digital marketing and how it can benefit your business. So instead, this post briefly recaps my recent Costa Rica Vacation 2021! It’s been a destination that I’ve been eager to visit. But little did I know that it would be one of my favorite vacations ever taken.
As expected, the global pandemic didn’t make things easy with our vacation. Our original plan was to try our luck booking our stay in December of 2020. But as we approached the Fall, we realized it wasn’t in the cards. Fortunately, the airlines and hotels offered travelers relief on all reservations booked in 2020 and 2021. As we made our way through November with another Covid wave in the making, we decided it was best to cancel our reservation and try again in the new year.
Where To Stay and What To Do During A Costa Rica Vacation
So that’s what we did. We re-booked a quick, five-night stay for mid-March at the JW Marriott in Guanacaste, a beautiful province on the West Coast of Costa Rica that hosts the popular tourist destination Tamarindo. Shortly after we landed and got to our hotel, our five-night stay turned into ten nights. We spent the last five nights in a beach-front condo at Flamingo Beach, one of the most popular beach towns on the West Coast of Costa Rica, known for its golf-cart community, beautiful beaches, and unforgettable sunsets.
Through research and recommendations from friends, we heard that Costa Rica offers visitors a little bit of everything. Surfing? Check. Hiking? Check. ATVing? Check. Pristine beaches, crystal clear water, and stunning sunsets? Check. Super friendly residents? Check. A vast assortment of wildlife? Check. Zip-lining through the jungles? Check. Delicious food and refreshing cocktails? Check. I can keep going, but I think you get the point. It’s no wonder why we met so many ex-Pats that decided to move down there after remote work-life became their reality.
We tried to experience as much as we could during our ten-day stay. It’s safe to say that we crossed off most of the checklist mentioned above. The JW Marriott employees treated us like royalty and knew us by name, partially because there weren’t many of us staying at the resort. The locals we met in and around the resort were super friendly. Our time in Playa Flamingo went the same way. Our entire stay was very stress-free. We enjoyed every second of it.
Why We Chose to Stay at the JW Marriott in Guanacaste
Several years ago, I made the best decision I’ve ever made when it comes to choosing the right credit card service for me. The decision was to sign up to be a Marriott Bonvoy member. Previous to my Bonvoy membership, I always enjoyed staying at Marriott hotels whenever I traveled. But I missed out on so many perks that are offered by Marriott, just for being a Bonvoy member.
I use my Marriott Bonvoy card on pretty much any expense that I can pay using a credit card. As a result, I have accrued hundreds of thousands of points that I can use for hotels and flights. I always choose to use my points for my hotels on vacations. I usually get at least three or four free nights with my points per year, which is huge considering that some Marriott hotels can cost upwards of $500 depending on what state or country you’re traveling to.
Needless to say, I had Marriott Bonvoy points to use because I hadn’t taken any vacations in over a year, due to the pandemic. My Bonvoy points covered four out of the five nights we stayed at the JW Marriott in Guanacaste. It was a no-brainer. It just so turns out that the JW Marriott in Guanacaste is one of the top-rated hotels in Costa Rica. It was a win-win situation for us and I had Marriott Bonvoy points to thank.
What We Didn’t Know About Costa Rica
But there was a sad side to our visit to Costa Rica that didn’t seem very obvious until after we arrived. The country has suffered severely from covid with economic impacts far worse than most other countries. Not because of a massive US-like death toll that swept the nation. Costa Rica has gone to great lengths to contain the coronavirus, and they’ve succeeded more than most other countries in the world. (The death toll just surpassed 3,000 as of April 2021.) Costa Rica’s economy is driven heavily by tourism. As expected, US tourism plays a crucial role in their local economy. With tourism being absent for most of 2020, the vast majority of the country was left unemployed, with no government assistance, as seen in the US and other first-world countries.
So, Costa Ricans have had a tough time surviving the pandemic until very recently. But the good news is that we’re almost out of the woods with covid. That means brighter days are ahead for all of us, including Costa Ricans. While Costa Rica’s rainy season (May-November) couldn’t come at a worse time as they’re starting to recover, tourism will pick up regardless. But it won’t be until the end of November until tourism hits its peak and this amazing country gets back to normalcy.
This is your cue to book your Costa Rica Vacation 2021 now. They will be happy to see you. Pura Vida!
